How to Identify Rising Damp

Recognising the signs early is key to preventing long-term damage. Look out for:

  • Tide marks or salt deposits on interior walls, usually up to 1.2m high
  • Peeling wallpaper or blistering paint
  • Damp patches and discoloured plaster
  • Musty odours or mould growth
  • Decaying skirting boards or timber
  • Cold, damp-feeling walls even in warm weather

If you spot any of these signs in your Sunderland or Durham property, it’s time to arrange a professional survey.

What Causes Rising Damp?

There are a few common causes of rising damp in properties across Wearside:

  • Failure or breakdown of the existing damp proof course
  • Older homes with no DPC (Damp Proof Course) installed
  • High external ground levels bridging the DPC
  • Porous brickwork or mortar joints allowing moisture ingress
  • Blocked or damaged drainage increasing ground saturation

Whatever the cause, our experienced team can diagnose the issue accurately and recommend the right long-term solution.

Our Rising Damp Treatment Process

At Wearside Damp and Timber, we follow a tried and tested process tailored to each property:

  1. Full Damp Survey: We assess the property, moisture levels, and potential structural concerns.
  2. Repair External Issues: We address high ground levels, faulty brickwork or pointing, and ensure the structure is sound.
  3. Remove Damaged Plaster: Internally, we remove contaminated plaster to at least 1 metre high (or 300mm above damp level).
  4. Inject Chemical DPC: We install a modern chemical damp proof course using BBA-approved products.
  5. Apply Stud Membrane: A 3mm waterproof membrane is installed to provide an immediate barrier against further moisture.
  6. Replaster & Finish: Once dry, we replaster with specialist materials, ready for you to redecorate in as little as 3–4 days.

Whatever the cause, our experienced team can diagnose the issue accurately and recommend the right long-term solution.

  • Accessibility and property type

Every rising damp job is different which is why it is important to get your property surveyed by a damp and timber specialist who will produce a detailed report for you and provide a no-obligation estimate.
